Sitting Bull,1831-1890. a Hunkpapa Lakota Sioux Chief and
holy man who united the Lakota tribes in their struggle on
the northern plains, and defeated General Custer at the Battle
of the Little Big Horn, after gold was discovered in the Black
Hills of Dakota Territory and hoards of white men rushed to
claim the gold, and build villages in the sacred area set aside
for the Sioux.
This 24 in. figure is a portrait doll, sculpted from photos of
the legendary Sioux leader. There is not one machine stitch
in his costuming. His war shirt has been copied from photos
of a Hunkpapa Sioux museum piece, as were his leggings, moccasins, lance and tomahawk. There are nearly 150 hand
tied miniature scalp locks on his war shirt, and all the beading
has been done by hand as well. His leather garments have
been hand sewn with sinew as was the custom of the Sioux.
There are 109 hand painted, tied and wrapped imitation eagle
feathers in his war bonnet and double trailers.
