~Broken Promises-Sioux~

0217

In Treaty with the Sioux in 1868 the U.S. government designated the Black Hills of the Dakotas, which was sacred to the Sioux, as Sioux Territory. The treaty was signed at Ft. Laramie and other Forts in the territory by the prominent Chiefs and ratified by the U.S. Congress. The area was set aside for the exclusive use of the Sioux and recognized as part of the Great Sioux Reservation.

However, in 1874 George A. Custer led an expedition of miners into the Black Hills seeking gold. When gold was found, hoards of miners began moving into the Black Hills and demanding protection from the U.S. Army. In 1876 General Custer led a detachment against the Sioux and Cheyenne on the Little Big Horn River. They were annihilated and the US government would continue to struggle against the Sioux until finally confiscating the territory in 1877. Ownership of the territory is still disputed.
